Heating Plant
The original heating plant was built in 1892 in the basement extension of Bishop Whipple Hall and was renovated in 1906. In 1904, it moved to the basement of the new gymnasium that was still under construction. In 1947, a new heating plant was transported from Sioux Falls, Iowa to the campus, which doubled heating capacity. In 1962, it was enlarged and was converted from coal to gas. By 1989, the heating plant was outdated and the college discontinued its use due to safety concerns. At this time, it became a storage facility and garage for carpool vehicles until it was demolished in 2004. Construction of the Mugaas Plant Operations Center was completed in 1989. Named for Nels Mugaas, superintendent for the buildings and grounds from 1937-1945, the building encompassed the entire physical plant. In 1991, the Berg Art Center was demolished to make room for the remodeled steam plant, aptly named the Berg Steam Plant.
