Hilda Brynjulson worked as the Normandy Supervisor from 1955 to 1980.

The Normandy is connected to Livedalen Hall and in Concordia's earlier history it housed a cafeteria, coffeehouse, post office, and bookstore. The Normandy, known as "The Norm," was a place to have a quick bite to eat or hang out with friends and socialize. Live entertainment that included comedians, open mic night, and local bands were added to make the Normandy a little more exciting. (27)

An important woman that worked here was Hilda Brynjulson, who was the snack bar supervisor. Hilda began working at Concordia College in June of 1955 and retired in 1980. She was described as "warm" and "wonderful" by the students. Even if it was her night off, she was still there just to make sure everything was running smoothly. (28) Hilda was always in a happy mood and could get excited over just about anything. She was an avid Scrabble player and could play up to about 16 games a night. One of her favorite opponents was Elizabeth Hassenstab, another Food Service employee. She also played "Pounce" and "Liverpool Rummy." (29) The students said that Hilda kept things lively and always had time for them.

In 1973, Hilda suffered third degree burns when she was making chokecherry jelly at home. The Concordian, the college newspaper, reported Hilda's incident since many students were wondering where she went. Hilda stayed in the hospital for four weeks and felt very much loved when friends and family came to support her. She was greatly missed by the students that regularly visited the Normandy. (30)

Hilda took pride in everything that she did. She said in an interview for a 1974 college newspaper article that she enjoys doing just about anything and she will get the last word in even if she has to whisper it! She was also described as "one of Concordia's favorite people." (31)

After Hilda had retired, the college newspaper reported comments from the students. One student had a problem with the Normandy and how the food orders weren't being cooked right away and the quality of service since Hilda left had gone down. The student mentioned that in the "Hilda Era" orders were made quickly and efficiently. (32) Hilda obviously left a mark on the students since they missed her so much. She was one that interacted with the students comfortably and let them have fun. Sometimes you could see her having more fun than the students. When looking in various newspaper articles from the college, many mention "Hilda." It was as it everyone knew who she was. No last name needed, just "Hilda."
