In 1950, the WAA redecorated and finished a former storage room in Fjelstad Hall to create a women’s recreation room. Mrs. Kolster, Concordia physical education instructor, was the adviser for this organization. The girls that utilized the recreation room saw demonstrations of different sports and received explanations of the rules. The recreation room also held meetings to discuss plans for the play nights that were held every third Thursday of each month. Four members of the WAA would be in charge of the play night which would last from 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. These play nights would consist of different tournaments in which the Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshman would all play against each other. [1] The WAA also sold candy in Fjelstad Hall every evening, other than weekends and special college activity nights, to provide funding for the WAA treasury. [2] Through women’s activities the WAA increased the interest in athletics and provided awards like pins, monograms, and sweaters for active participants. [3]
