Hello darling:
I bet you think that I’ve forgotten you because I haven’t written you a letter for a long time. I’ve been pretty busy up until last night and then I went to the P.X. [post-exchange] to have a soda. I had a funny thing happen to me while I was drinking my soda. A girl came and sat down beside of me and asked me if I would help her find her husband. Well after walking around for about an hour and a half we finally located him. He was in the mess hall doing K.P. [kitchen police] in Co. B. So then I figured I[‘d] go back and finish drinking a soda in peace. I got in front of the P.X. again and a car stop[ped]

[Page 2]

and another woman calls out to me asked me if I could tell her where I could find her husband. She said he was an officer in the 6th [written in roman numerals] arm’d [armed] Corp. so I told her how to get there and she left. I thought that would be the last I’d see of her but no. I had my soda and was about to go back to the motor pool to go to sleep when she drives up again and said she had gone all over camp and couldn’t find him. So I said to her, I’ll make a bargain with you. I show you where your hubby is if you take me to my barracks after-words because I said I didn’t feel like walking about two miles back to go to bed. She agreed and we found him so then I went to bed. You know darling I must be a kind hearted guy. I find these two women there [sic] husband but nobody wants

[to] bring me to my girlfriend or future wife. Darling I wish I had you with me and this war was over. I’m getting so sick of this single life it[‘s] driving me nuts. I got a letter from Mike and he says he likes it a lot better down in Arkansas but he says it[‘s] a lot hotter. I got a letter from Evelyn and she said she met you and your aunt and told me about the two kids. Gee I’d love to see the two new ones but I’d rather see you. Well darling to morrow [sic] is another one of those early to rise day[s] that I’ve been so used to so I guess I [will] close now but darling don’t forget that I love you and will be back

[Page 4]

some day to keep you company the rest of your life and may you live to be five hundred at least. I don’t want much do I darling? I love you darling and I’m praying for this war to end quickly so we can get married and have a little home of our own or an apartment anyway. Lot of love

Howard.

[The following was written as a postscript.]

P.S. It’s tale so you will probably have a hard time reading this but you’ll make it out before you get the next letter. (I hope.) another

P.S. I love you.
