Hello darling:
I just got one of your letters that you sent me with the address upside down. What[‘]s the matter is everything up there upside down like it is down home? I got a pass Saturday night about seven o’clock and it was good until Monday morning at six so that[‘]s why you haven’t had any letters from me over the weekend. I was going to write and ask you if it was alright but I so seldom got a day off that I just couldn’t stay in camp. I do hope darling that you won’t be mad. I didn’t do anything wrong but had a pretty good time. Well anyways as good as could expected without you. Gee I wish you could of been there we could of really had fun. Do you want to

hear about it? Well I’m going to tell you anyway. I took a bus from camp to Hopskinville, KY [Kentucky] then from there I took one to Nashville, Tenn. No I wasn’t all alone I had another fellow from the company with me. His name is Randy Boache, another Cpl. [Corporal] Well when we got in the city it was filled with the soldiers from the second army and it wasn’t so good so we decided to take another tide. It was eight-thirty when we bought tickets for Bowling Greens and it was a nice ride. We got off at the station and went to the hotel to get a room. Well all they had was a two room apartment with bath so we took it. Boy I’m telling you we were high class and after we checked in we went out to look over the town. It was quite late so there wasn’t much going on but you would like it. Well we hit the hay around one-thirty and left word to be called at eight because we decided to spend all our time in a hotel.

Well the next morning the telephone rings and I answered it and there was a soldier at the desk that wanted to see me so I asked the clerk what his name was and when he told me it was Joe Newland I told him to tell him to come up. He just came back from the battlefront and I was with him back at Fort Knox and it was good to see him. He got hit pretty hard, though. He wouldn’t say much but on thing he did say, “War is Hell” and stay on this side as long as you can. Well we went on a sight seeing [sic] tour around the place and started back about nine o’clock Sunday night but I kept thinking of you all the time. They had a big dance down there but I didn’t go but I would have if you had been there. Gee darling why do we have to be over a thousand miles apart?

[Page 4]

It’s mad that I mind the [illegible deletion] fifteen hundred miles but I would like to see you once in a while [sic]. Ah well I guess that[‘s] life. I love you so much. I can’t have a good time without you and don’t ever think I don’t. Nobody ever loved anyone more than I love you. Well darling I have to say goodnight. Lot of love

Howard.
