Whereas
Only 12% of 1066 student respondents in a survey of the student body utilize
tobacco products on campus; and
Whereas
an overwhelming majority (88% of this same sample) affirme
d that they do not
use tobacco products; and
Whereas
Just over 3
% of the campus community (27% of campus tobacco users) consume
tobacco on a daily basis; and
Whereas
70% of students support Concordia College becoming a tobacco free campus, and
Whereas
90%
of students deem this issue as important; and
Whereas
only 10% of students do not see this as an important issue, prompting Student
Government action; and
Whereas
The opinion of Concordia College’s students is supportive of the eradication of
the use of to
bacco products on campus, in the pursuit of respecting the collective
wishes of a majority of students on campus, and in an attempt to build a
community that is responsive to the needs of its students, and improve the overall
experience of current students
, as well as future Cobbers; therefore be it
RESOLVED That the Student Government Association advocates for a campus policy that
prohibits use of tobacco products anywhere on campus; and be it further
RESOLVED If this position is deemed not feasible, it is the position of Student Government to
designate specific smoking areas on campus in the attempt to allow students the
ability to smoke, while protecting the majority of students from exposure to
sec
ondhand smoke.
