Camp Campbell, Kentucky
April 23. 1943
Darling:
Thanks for the box of candy I got to-day [sic]. It’s been quite a while since I had any good candy. You see, down here they got us rationed to[o]. All we can eat is two bars of candy a day at the P.X. [Post Exchange] and they don’t taste so bad. Well here I am with Mike to night [sic]. He just came in from a long convoy and he says he’s tired. He just got a letter from his wife (Mary) and she said that she was listening to the program from Camp Campbell to[o] and she wanted to know if he was there. Darling last night I had a dream

and in it you were living in Clarksville. That’s a [sic] little town about seven miles from camp and I was going in to see you every night. Well anyway this [illegible deletion] night I was on my way to seen you and when I got to the door I punched the doorbell and the alarm clock went off. That[‘s] the trouble with this army. They even spoil a good dream. Darling do you still think I’ll be home for Easter? If you do you’ve better change your plans because as much as I’d like to I can’t. Se[e] I might as well get used to the idea of staying here for a little while longer. We got to get this group of boys we got here now ready to get over the waves in about an other [sic] month of two. Well darling I still love you even more than I can say. I can’t

begin to express my feelings because there[‘s] no word for it. Well darling there’s getting to be a paper shortage so I’ve got to quit for to night [sic]. But just in case you think I’m going out and spending my money instead of spending it to [sic] [on] you I’m not. I got forty dollars I[‘m] spending [on] you if I don’t get a furlough before pay day. Good night, darling and I’ll always love you.

Howard.
