Hi kid:
How’s the rough old world treating you to-day [sic]? I can’t complain because I’m still on this side of the pond. While I was home they shipped a lot of boys over. Boy is it hot down here. You don’t even get a little breeze. I got a letter from Mike, you remember him don’t you? Well he just had a furlough and he didn’t want to come back to the army either so I guess I’m not the only one. I guess that Paula doesn’t like it to [sic] much either from his letters that he writes. Well darling there [is] nothing new down here except this morning a guy came into

camp. You know, one of those smart Tenn. [Tennessee] hillbillies and told one of the Sgt. [sergeant] that he wanted to join the army. So the boys though they would have a little fun. They made him take off his shirt and started giving him an examination then they made him do a little double timing around the block and after that they gave him a [illegible deletion] G.I. hair cut. Well they cut all his hair off except a little round spot about two inches square. Then the Sgt. [sergeant] said here [is] a pass for seven days and come back home in seven days and we’ll give you a gun. Well the poor boy started walking away and he got a little way down the street and turned back saying I don’t want to join the army after all. He couldn’t join anyway. The draft board turned him down. Well darling good night [sic] for now and I miss you [a] lot. I love you so very much. Love
Howard.
