Biography

Composer of “Hymn to Concordia,” Herman Monson directed the Concordia Choir for 14 years. Under his leadership, the choir was praised for “being like a mighty organ upon which the director played.” Monson was a 1914 graduate of Luther College who also studied at the Louisville Conservatory of Music and MacPhail School of Music. He wrote several compositions including a musical setting for “The Twenty-Third Psalm” and an arrangement of “A Mighty Fortress.” In 1931, he published the first edition of the “Concordia College Choir Series.” Monson was noted in the 1937 yearbook as being very willing to help students who showed abilities in harmonizing and composition.
