Biography

A native of Thompson, ND, Jens Hjelmstad attended Concordia Academy as a student from 1905-1908. He also served as a commercial instructor in penmanship, typing, and shorthand. In 1912, he received a Bachelor of Art’s degree from the University of South Dakota and earned his Master of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota in 1915. He spent the following year studying at the University of Oslo as a member of the American Scandinavian Foundation. Hjelmstad was hired at Concordia in 1922 to serve as Treasurer and professor. Prior to his appointment at Concordia, he taught for three years at the North Dakota Agricultural College in Fargo. Hjelmstad was often noted by students as having a dry sense of humor and being a witty speaker.
