Title

Letter to Yvette from Howard, April 5, 1945

Description

Howard talks about being moved to Germany and also describes the place in France he was previously stationed at. He complains again about being far from home and jokes about buying Yvette a pair of wooden shoes so shoe rationing won’t leave her barefoot.

Germany

Dearest darling wife,
We do get around in this army don’t we? Here I am in Germany I haven’t written for about five days because you know I’ve been pretty busy. I did get a letter from you to day [sic] and it helped a lot. You know darling the farther east I go the more west I’d like to be of course they can stop when they get me near Boston. Well darling now that I’m not in france [sic] anymore I don’t think I’ll be any good the with the little french [sic] I picked up. You can tell your mother that I didn’t pick up

[Page 2]

enough french [sic] to converse with her but I’ll get along if I don’t forget what I’ve learned. When I was in france I was located in a little town called Ry, but it [is] probably so small you wouldn’t be able to find it on a map any way it wasn’t very far from Rouen. I’m putting a post card [sic] with a picture of the place that I lived in so if it don’t [sic] go through let me know. Well darling I can’t say I like it very much over here but I guess you got to have to take it. There’s been so many times I’ve wished I was back in Providence and just last night I [dreamed?] a dream I was there but I woke up and you know how it is. Darling anyway this war can’t last forever and when I get home it’ll be a long time

before I’ll leave you. If I go anywhere we’ll go to gether [sic] or not at all. I’m getting to be strictly a home type guy. Well darling I picked you up a pair of wooden shoes in Belgium size 5 if I ever get a chance to send them. With the shoe rationing I wouldn’t want to see my wife go barefooted. I’m only kidding though darling I love you so very much and I really got the shoes and with all that hat weather you’ve got over there you can send me a little. I’ve been cold for a few days now. Well I’m going to close now but remember I love you and if you don’t get letters regular from me don’t worry. I’ll be alright. As Ever,

Howard

[The following is written as a postscript]

P.S. I do love to have someone to worry about me though. I love you.
