Dear Mummy,
Well this is the first day of bivouac and as usual it rained, but it was a good thing because it got cooler after. If you can’t read this its [sic] because its [sic] too dark and black out rules says you can’t use a light, but I couldn’t sleep unless I wrote you a letter. I got two letters from you to day [sic] and I wish what you say is true about the war being almost over but I guess it’ll be a long time yet. Well we got out to the bivouac area early this morning and then from there we were sent to the range. We stayed on the range all day and then
[Page 2]
went back to the bivouac to sleep. I don’t think I’ll ever sleep on the ground after I get out of the army darling so you don’t have to worry. Darling I love you very much and wish I could go home. I guess the furlough will start again around the first of oct. [sic] so mine out [sic] to come around [sic] the last of oct. [sic] or first of Nov. I love you darling but I guess I’ll have to quit now because I can’t see the paper hardly. Your 4-F Husband,
Howard
