Concordia College and Childcare

In comparison, Concordia College can be said to have been rather quick in the establishment of its daycare facility as some higher education institutions are still struggling to do so today. The idea of an on-campus childcare facility at Concordia was first considered and then set aside at the end of the 1980s as the need for it was deemed too unimportant to act upon.

The concern for the issue grew over time. In 1990, a number of faculty and staff members entering parenthood voiced their wish to be able to visit their babies on a daily basis. The "Baby Group," a parent-run childcare program, was thus created. It was located in one of the apartments of the International Center on 8th Street, a complex of apartments designed to receive international students as well as students interested in foreign languages.[9][10]

In 1991, The Baby Group was moved to the Professional building on 8th Street and 11th Avenue - now known as Concordia's Advancement Center - and took the name of The Cobber Kids Corner. [11]A little over 10 years later, the childcare center had to reconsider its location again because of an increasing demand for its services. It ultimately moved to the Riverside Center, 310 14th Ave. S., a former elementary school that Concordia bought and renovated in 2004 [12], and it has remained there ever since.
