Memorial Auditorium

Chapel moved from Old Main to Memorial Auditorium shortly after its construction in 1952. At first, the change in location was met with much opposition among both students and faculty. Memorial was a less central location on campus, and both students and faculty expressed a dislike for the set-up of Memorial itself, especially because the speaker had to stand “at the bottom of the hill” when addressing the community. In fact, 75% of Concordia faculty and students opposed the move to Memorial, but the community had outgrown the space available to it in Old Main.[6]

Concordia became affiliated with the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in 1967.[7] While the ALC ordained their first female pastor in 1970, Concordia did not call their first full-time female campus pastor until 1995.[8]  In the interim, males dominated most of the leadership in ministry, although females participated mainly through music.
