Students carrying books for "Operation Horsepack" to move them into the Carl B. Ylvisaker Library, 1956.

As C-400’s first project, the library was built in 1956 at the cost of $400,000. At the request of students, it was named for Carl B. Ylvisaker, a religion professor from 1925-1945. The building won the American Institute of Architects award for architectural beauty in 1957. Students and faculty contributed to the project by participating in “Operation Horsepack,” which involved carrying 44,000 books from the basement of Fjelstad to the new shelves. A $950,000 addition was built in 1971 and remodeling occurred in 1990.
